Сами римляне считали их центральным событием своей истории. Настоящее исследование сделано на основе данных Плутарха, который дает очень связный глубокий и содержательный обзор гражданских войн с безукоризненной точностью выбирая основные поворотные пункты и события этого периода. Именно Плутарх создал образы эпохи и ее главных действующих лиц — эпохи кризиса римской республики. И если для Цицерона (и, вероятно, Ливия) судьба мира решалась в Риме, и главным был внутренний конфликт, расколовший римское общество, а за ним и весь остальной мир его союзников, подданных и внешних сил, а Аппиан считал главным «поражающим фактором» эпохи социальный конфликт в Италии и провинциях, то Плутарх несколько смещает акценты, показывая, что период 133-31 гг. до н. э. был не только временем грандиозной гражданской войны, но и столь же грандиозного нашествия варваров (галлов, германцев, парфян, балканских народов и др.), сопровождаемого восстанием внутреннего «варварского» мира и, что было особенно опасно, внутренним расколом римского общества. Плутарх создает тот достаточно похожий, но все-таки альтернативный взгляд на римскую историю, который позволяет оспорить картину Цицерона хотя бы частично.
